Flicker chick begging-its 2 siblings are still in the hole |
We have a fir tree near the house that was gradually topped and is largely rotten. Various birds have tried to use it. I've seen black capped chickadees, sapsuckers and flickers investigating this tree. The first year we lived here there were starlings in the hole...thus the chunk of plywood nailed to it. The current residents are Northern Flickers and the 3 chicks are getting pretty close to fledging. The adults have been busy at all hours keeping them provisioned. Neat.
